On May 22, 2021, at 4:36 PM, my first born, Katelyn Bailey, at 22 years old was struck by a truck on the passenger’s side of her car suffering a traumatic brain injury. Upon the EMT's arrival, she was found unconscious, she was not breathing, and she had no pulse. Kaitlyn was immediately airlifted by helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center. She was in a coma and was put on a respirator to breathe. When her Mom and I arrived at the hospital, we were told that Kaitlyn had a very severe brain injury with swelling and bleeding on the brain, and there was nothing else they could do for her. We were told that they did not expect her to make it through the night.
Miraculously, Kate did, however, make it through the night, but lost the ability to speak, walk, swallow and even see clearly. The right side of her brain was affected in the crash, which caused the entire left side of her body, the use of her left leg, arm and hand were non functioning. Kate was in a coma for 7 days and spent a total of 62 days in the hospital. We were able to bring her home on ............
Since then, we have navigated over 1.5 million dollars in medical bills and two years of painful and incredibly difficult therapy for Kate. Kim and I have become 24 hour care givers along with help from Kim’s mom, Sandy. Insurance has run its course and we have spent an additional 80 thousand dollars out of pocket on therapy to move Kate forward in her recovery.
Healing from a TBI is a long, long road and staying focused and hopeful can be very challenging from day to day.
The miraculous news is that Kate has the potential for a full recovery if she receives the right help. The problem is the help we need is very expensive, which is why we are now seeking additional ways to fund her continued needs. Currently we need 50k to cover 5 months of intensive Hyperbaric treatment therapy from the Aviv clinics in The Villages of Florida. It was also recommended for Kate to take three doses of stem cell shots to hopefully bring movement back to her left hand and arm.
These treatments are 16k each for three treatments. It is also being suggested that we purchase several in home therapy devices for her continued care. Presently, our ongoing needs for Kate are at $120,000.00.
We have created this nonprofit, called the Adair Fund, in order to connect with generous families and foundations for financial support to both help Kate make a full recovery, but also support other families navigating TBI.
